The harpies here in their amphitheatre mountain stronghold were set up as a sort of infernal security doorman for what lays beyond. And boy, did they do their job well.
Divide and conquer is the rule. The happless Chen racced ahead on his nimble feet only to be slaughtered in he cauldron while Thesis could only trudge along behind never being able to lay a blow.
Fortunately Wer, Bodush (and eventually Durin, Eolar and Elogyn) were able to deal with the flying hags and save both Chen and some wretched old git who made jiggy with the foul beasts.
